GHA strives to offer equal opportunity for everyone to use and enjoy our housing programs.

You may be considered a person with a disability if a physical or mental impairment causes you substantial difficulty in performing a major life function. Major life functions include the ability to walk, see, hear, breathe, think, read or care for yourself.

A physical disability can be caused by illness, disease, a birth defect, injury, age or anything else that disrupts a person’s physical ability to function. Some examples of physical disabilities are blindness, hearing loss, or inability to walk. A mental disability is a mental, psychiatric or psychological disorder. Some examples are mental illness, developmental disability or specific learning disabilities.

If you have a disability, you may be entitled to reasonable accommodation: a change to your apartment or procedure that will better allow you an equal opportunity to utilize our housing programs. For example, it might be reasonable to lower the cabinets for someone in a wheelchair, put grab bars in the bathroom for someone with mobility impairment, or install a fire alarm that flashes for someone who has a hearing impairment. It might also be reasonable to allow a person with a mental disability to have rent payments made by a third party.

Any accommodation that we consider cannot result in an unreasonable financial or administrative burden for the Gary Housing Authority or create a fundamental change to any Home Forward program.

Policy of Non-Discrimination

We are pledged to the letter and the spirit of the U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity for all people. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtain housing. Gary Housing Authority will not discriminate against any person on grounds of race, color, religion, sex, handicap (disability), familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, source of income, age, or marital status.
